News : Courses to help youngsters pedal their way through the summer

Lancaster City Council is encouraging local youngsters to pedal their way through the summer holidays this year with another varied selection of on and off-road cycle courses.

All cycle skills courses take place at Salt Ayre Sports Centre and cater for children aged from 4 to 13 years old.

Learn to Cycle (4+ year olds)
These courses are aimed at children who use stabilisers or cannot yet ride.  Pedals (and stabilisers) are removed from bikes so that the children can learn to balance before they progress to pedalling.  All participants should bring a roadworthy bike which allows the seat to be lowered.  Adults accompanying children may be ask to assist.

NEW Cycle skills (5-8 year olds)
This is a new course for children who have recently had their stabilisers removed and can cycle unaided.  The training covers skills such as turning, setting off and stopping. This two hour course will be all off-road.

Cycle skills (6-9 year olds)
These two hour courses are all off-road, lots of fun and open to all abilities.

Cycle skills (10-13 year olds)
Again, these two hour courses are all off-road and open to all abilities.  Participants will practice bike handling skills to prepare them for riding on the road.  They will cover National Standards level 1 and those who pass will receive a certificate.

On-road cycle skills and bike ride! (10–13 year olds)
Children should have completed the off-road cycle skills course before taking part in this three hour on-road cycling activity which will cover some of National Standards level 2.  Don’t forget to bring some money for the snack stop en route!

All courses cost £6 and participants must have a roadworthy bike to take part and bring suitable clothing for being outdoors.

Children under 8 should be accompanied by an adult.
