Cycle Referral - Health on Wheels
A Cycling on Referral Pilot in Lancaster and MorecambeIn partnership with the CDT, North Lancashire Primary Care Trust, Cycling Projects and Cycling England a cycling on referral pilot project began in April 2007. A second project ran between August and October 2007.
The aim of the project was to
-
support clients in improving their health and managing long-term health conditions, through increasing physical activity levels
-
support new and ex-cyclists to undertake cycling activity on a regular basis
How the Project worked
Clients were referred by primary care services (eg Cardiac Rehab and Pulmonary Rehab). Appropriate clients (ie had to already be able to ride a bike) were asked to complete an evaluation questionnaire before starting the 12 week programme.
The programme consisted of regular group bike rides, led by qualified cycle trainers. The rides were low risk and focussed on fun and enjoyment and increasing confidence in cycling. The aim was to leave clients with the confidence to cycle on a regular basis.
