While Valentine’s Day may be long forgotten for most of us, pupils at Ellel St. John’s C.E. Primary School in Lancaster want to show how passionate they feel about cycling with an ‘I love my bike day’ on 21st February. The school, one of eleven in Lancaster taking part in Sustrans’ Bike It project, will be visited by the cycle touring musical show, Inner Tuba, during the special action day. And pupils will receive special I love my bike goodies, like bike bells and stickers, thanks to money raised recently by top pop band, the Scissor Sisters. The band supported Bike It at a recent gig after hearing of its success in encouraging children to cycle to school.

Sustrans Bike It Officer, Kathy Bashford, will teach the children about how to take care of their bikes, and local ‘Dr Bike’ mechanics Colin Stone and Anna Singleton will be at hand to help check and repair all the bikes. Jon Hodkin, of Inner Tuba, tours all over the country on his recumbent bike with his tuba safely stored in his amazing custom built trailer. He will entertain and educate the children about cycling, making music, exercise and health, trailer building and lots more!

Sustrans’ Bike It Officer, Kathy Bashford, said: 'Children at Ellel school will be inspired and enabled to cycle to school by this special 'love my bike' day. Inner Tuba shows are inspiring, fun and educational, and Dr Bike will ensure that the children's bikes are in good shape ready for cycling to school throughout the spring and summer!'

Between 19 February and 2 March Inner Tuba will be performing shows in ten of the eleven Bike It schools funded by Lancaster’s Cycling Demonstration Town project, and a few of the schools are making a day of it with ‘love my bike’ events.

The participating schools have been selected for their enthusiasm for cycling, taking into account the potential to increase cycling in the area.
