The National Standards

Launched in 2003/4 the National Standards for cycle training aim to promote a nationally agreed uniform syllabus and guidelines for all cycle training in the UK. The standards were developed through consultation with experts and interested parties.

The National Standard is the expected competency of the cyclist upon completion of a training course at 3 levels.

  • Level 1 is usually covered in a traffic free environment.
  • Level 2 is covered on quiet roads but with real traffic conditions.
  • Level 3 is covered on busy roads incorporating real traffic conditions and advanced road features.

Level 1 includes:
  • Getting on and off the bike without help
  • Using gears
  • Look all around, including behind, without wobbling
  • Carrying out a simple bike check
  • Stopping quickly with control
Level 2 includes:
  • Start and finish an on-road journey
  • Understand how and when to signal their intentions to other road users
  • Pass parked or slower moving vehicles
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the Highway Code, in particular how to interpret road sign
  • Demonstrate an understanding of safety equipment and clothing
Level 3 includes:
  • How to use roundabouts &junctions controlled by traffic lights
  • Hazard perception and strategy to deal with hazards
  • How to use both on and off-road cycle facilities
  • An understanding of route planning
  • An understanding of filtering and an ability to decide when to filter and when to wait

Please note that the above lists are not exhaustive but give an 'idea' of the things that will be covered.
