Getting a Bike

There are as many types of bike out there as there are reasons to go cycling. Choosing the right one for you depends on what type of journeys you're going to make.

For instance if you're a long distance commuter buying a folding bike could help you stop driving to the train station. For general travel to work and the shops perhaps a city bike or tourer would be suitable, And for those of you who prefer tracks and trails then perhaps a mountain bike or a hybrid.

Tax Efficient Cycle Purchase Scheme

Cycle to Work leafletTo promote cycle commuting the government has introduced tax exemptions for employers to loan cycles and equipment as tax-free benefits.

The scheme allows employees to benefit from a long term loan of bikes and commuting equipment such as lights, locks and panniers completely tax free.

Employers benefit from fitter, more punctual, more wide-awake staff. Employees benefit from better health and better bikes because their money goes further. With a budget of, say £400, an employee in the high tax-band can now afford a bike, plus accessories, worth nearly £800.

Second Hand Bikes

Unfortunately these can sometimes be hard to come by - but they are out there. If you have an unused one or two sitting in the garage please think about donating it to someone who could make use of it.
  • Try using our messageboard to advertise both unwanted bikes and to make a request
  • Try your local freegle group - www.ilovefreegle.com
  • Use the local press or ebay
